CRM'S ADOLESCENT LITERACY PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

Adolescent literacy is the most pressing issue facing middle and high schools today. The literacy demands facing adolescents in the 21st century far exceed what was required in the past. At the same time, there is overwhelming evidence from many sources that the majority of American middle and high school students do not have the skills to meet these demands.

The vision and mandates of No Child Left Behind -- with its focus on standards-based learning, literacy for all students, meeting annual yearly progress targets, and continuous improvement -- require an emphasis on content-area literacy at the middle and high school levels. More than ever, achieving higher levels of literacy and learning for diverse student populations requires shared school-wide responsibility for literacy development across the curriculum. CRM's SPIRAL Program helps middle and high schools effectively support literacy and learning for ALL students, and meet the challenges of No Child Left Behind.

CRM is the content provider for the Adolescent Literacy in the Content Areas Spotlight of the Knowledge Loom sponsored by the Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory at Brown University (LAB). As a major partner in the LAB, CRM has contributed significantly to the LAB's work in adolescent literacy, including the development of the Adolescent Literacy Support Framework (Meltzer, 2001), Adolescent Literacy Resources: Linking Research and Practice (Meltzer, 2002), and numerous articles, national and regional presentations and workshops, and policy briefs.

CRM also collaborated with the National Urban League on a Carnegie Corporation-funded initiative to develop a strategic planning model for mobilizing urban communities around adolescent literacy.
