THE SPIRAL Adolescent Literacy Audit
Building School Capacity to Improve Student Literacy

The SPIRAL Adolescent Literacy Audit maps literacy support and
literacy instruction across the school program, and results in a school-wide plan to address the literacy needs of ALL students.

The SPIRAL Adolescent Literacy Audit is a data-driven process that builds school capacity to implement a systemic approach to literacy development and literacy instruction across content areas. Schools examine their status against research-based practices, and receive a detailed analysis of school and teacher capacity to improve literacy skills with specific recommendations for improvement.

The SPIRAL Adolescent Literacy Audit:

  • Provides a comprehensive analysis of school-wide literacy support, the extent to which classroom practices that support literacy are being implemented across content areas, and teacher knowledge of research-based strategies.
  • Profiles the school's current capacity to improve students' literacy skills.
  • Describes strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Provides an analysis of teachers' professional development needs.
  • Provides an integrated set of content area literacy strategies for immediate implementation.
  • Results in a clear plan for improving students' reading and writing skills.
  • Includes leadership training on the essential elements of effective school-wide literacy support.

The Audit process results in a customized School-Wide Literacy Action Plan that provides strategies the school can use immediately to improve student reading and learning and a Content-Area Literacy Professional Development Plan designed to achieve consistent teacher use of research-based literacy approaches for middle and high school students.

The SPIRAL Adolescent Literacy Audit helps schools implement the most effective strategies for improving students' reading and writing skills. The process saves costly planning time, ensures that data-based decisions are being made, and provides a means to monitor future success.
