The SPIRAL Adolescent
Literacy Audit is a data-driven process
that builds school capacity to implement a systemic
approach to literacy development and literacy
instruction across content areas. Schools examine their
status against research-based practices, and receive a
detailed analysis of school and teacher capacity to
improve literacy skills with specific recommendations
for improvement.
The SPIRAL Adolescent
Literacy Audit:
- Provides a comprehensive analysis of school-wide
literacy support, the extent to which classroom
practices that support literacy are being
implemented across content areas, and teacher
knowledge of research-based strategies.
- Profiles the school's current capacity to
improve students' literacy skills.
- Describes strengths and areas for improvement.
- Provides an analysis of teachers' professional
development needs.
- Provides an integrated set of content area
literacy strategies for immediate implementation.
- Results in a clear plan for improving students'
reading and writing skills.
- Includes leadership training on the essential
elements of effective school-wide literacy support.
The Audit process results in a customized School-Wide
Literacy Action Plan that provides strategies the school
can use immediately to improve student reading and
learning and a Content-Area Literacy Professional
Development Plan designed to achieve consistent teacher
use of research-based literacy approaches for middle and
high school students.
