The Power of Data Disaggregation

An integrated database is essential to producing data on the wide range of questions related to analyzing relationships among multiple factors. SOCRATES has unparalleled capacity to disaggregate multiple performance indicators by any combination of other factors. With this capacity, state, district, school, and other decision-makers can answer questions such as the following:
  • What are the differences between schools that are making adequate yearly progress and schools that are not: differences in the student populations, school characteristics, teacher characteristics, and district and community characteristics?

  • What school, district, and teacher characteristics are associated with success for student sub-groups--race/ethnicity, LEP, disability, and economically disadvantaged?

  • What are the longitudinal trends across multiple performance indicators?

  • How effective are particular programs (e.g., Title 1, Reading Recovery, Special Education, Supplemental Services) in helping students with diverse characteristics succeed?

  • Do schools that have a high percentage of highly-qualified teachers show better results that schools with similar populations but less qualified teachers?

  • What is the relationship between per-pupil expenditure and student achievement?

  • What are the longitudinal trends for specific student groups? Are there groups whose performance is persistently poor?

These and many other questions are important in ensuring accountability and improvement at the state, district, and school levels.
